My involvement in Bay Area planning goes back a number of decades to my roles as director of San Francisco's first neighborhood conservation program and as Development Coordinator for two mayors of San Francisco, including participation in the original formulation of ABAG. Much more recently I represented the Air District in the (almost-successful) Bay Vision 2020 effort to significantly reshape regional governance. My involvement in causes harmonious with that of ADPSR includes charter membership -- and the role of West Coast representative -- of Planners for Equal Opportunity; I am also a charter member of the current Planners Network, an association of progressive professionals. My most recent work experiences -- especially since I "semi-retired" from the Air District in 1997 -- are focused on efforts to develop bridges between environmental and social aspects of planning. For instance: environmental justice and social equity are the basic themes of my work with the Urban Habitat Program. Community enhancement, as well as creation of affordable, ecologically sound housing for the very poor and afflicted are the missions of Resources for Community Development, on whose Board I sit. My work with Friends of the Earth Middle East (an multinational Non-Governmental-Organization -- an association of Egyptian, Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian environmental organizations) focuses on the relationship between environmental protection in promoting peace and cooperation among nations -- themes central to the original mission of ADPSR.
