David Kibbey's involvement
with ADPSR began more than a decade ago with the planning of NorCal's
first major conference on green building, the Healthy Building Conference
in 1992. David not only shaped that conference, he shaped our realization
that ecological considerations could really lead to a viable way of
building. David was the editor of ADPSR's Architectural Resource Guide,
turning it from miscellaneous notes to a significant directory of sources
for ecological building. As a dedicated board member, he balanced serious
work with a wry and sometimes silly sense of humor, contributing daily
to the heart and soul of the organization. He had the unique quality
of always doing more than was expected of him, especially when volunteering.
David was both an expert and an advocate for improving indoor air quality,
who shared his considerable knowledge of human health in the built environment
with anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. He was committed
to finding solutions to the adverse health effects of buildings on people,
especially people with chemical sensitivities, and was a strong backer
of natural building methods. It is both the subject David helped us
to know as well as the fervor with which he pursued the answers that
has led us to offer this scholarship. The chemical soup we unwittingly
surround ourselves with creates so many unknown compounds and health
effects, yet because the needed research benefits directly no product,
system or company, the motivation is non-existent. We hope to encourage
this necessary area of discussion and help to find the answers.
The David Kibbey Memorial Scholarship is made possible by donations
