The 1% Solution
John Peterson principal of Peterson Architects as well as Founder & Chairman of Public Architecture, a non-profit.
While many-perhaps most-architects give of their expertise from time to time, the profession as a whole has not structured its pro bono endeavors as clearly as has, say, the legal profession. In conversation with architects across the country, Public Architecture is developing the notion of the "1% Solution"- the goal of devoting 1% of all architects' working hours, on a nation-wide basis, to matters of public service. Based on a 40-hour workweek, the 1% Solution represents a modest 20 hours per year per person. Were every architecture firm in the U.S. to sign on, however, the collective resources would be the equivalent of a 2500 person firm working full time for the public good: 5,000,000 hours of work in the public interest annually.
