High-Performance Straw-Bale Designs

David Mar, Tipping Mar and Associates The talk will cover a broad range of structural design issues in high-performance straw-bale designs. It will feature the Harrison house (by Skillful Means, design/build), a vaulted structure with load bearing straw-bale shearwalls, as well as low cost housing in rural China (by Kelly Lerner, architect). The highlight of the talk will be the new design information distilled from the extensive structural testing program conducted through the Ecological Building Network. The program covered component tests, full scale shearwall tests and full scale out-of-plane wall tests, with both earth plaster and cement stucco skins. Details, design guidelines, and recommendations will be presented. There will also be a panel discussion on straw bale after the presentation.

About the Mechanics' Institute: The Mechanics' Institute in downtown San Francisco houses the oldest library on the West Coast and one of the oldest chess clubs in the United States. It was organized in 1854 by a small group of citizens as a center for adult technical education, at a time when San Francisco was a remote frontier community. The Institute is located in a historic 1910 building at 57 Post Street, and today maintains a large circulation and reference library. It is one of San Francisco's most important cultural institutions, and regularly hosts programs for its members and the community, including readings, lectures and discussions about film, literature, technology, political affairs and current events.

Contractors: Become a Certified Green Building Professional
Consumers are becoming aware of the benefits of green building and are looking for building professionals who are knowledgeable in this field. The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (SFBA NARI) presents the Certified Green Building Professional (CGBP) certification process for California licensed building professionals. The program consists of a four-session course on how to apply green building methods and materials in remodeling. Participants go through a series of classes/courses based on the overarching principles of Green Building. The classes are broken down into two evening and two half-day training modules covering Energy Efficiency, Resource Conservation, Indoor Air Quality and Developing and Marketing a Green Business. David Johnston, President of What's Working, an international environmental design and consulting firm specializing in environmental construction technology, leads the classes. Nine additional speakers add to the class by giving in depth presentations on their different areas of expertise and show case studies of implementation of these methods. Those who take the class and pass a final exam receive a certificate and can differentiate themselves in the marketplace by offering unique expertise and services to the homeowners. They also are eligible to have their company's description posted on the NARI website and become a member of the Green Guild, The Green Guild is made up of graduates of the class that meet every month for continuing education in the area of green building.
