Workshop for A Monument to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade
Please join the Veterans and Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade at a workshop to begin the creation of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Monument in Harry Bridges Plaza. The ALB Monument Committee invites historians, activists, artists, designers, local residents and businesses, and others to learn about plans for the monument, and to join our discussion about what this tribute will mean. A site at the north end of Harry Bridges Plaza, in front the Ferry Terminal, has been approved by the Port Commission and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for a monument honoring those Americans who joined the international anti-fascist struggle during the Spanish Civil War. This prominent site was selected as a fitting tribute to the Veterans' legacy, and for their own connections to the San Francisco waterfront. The ALB Monument Committee will be developing a competition for the monument's designer this Fall and we hope to dedicate the artwork by early 2003. Workshop participants include: Peter Carroll, Historian Russ Elllis, Professor Emeritus, UC Berkeley School of Architecture Donna Graves, ALBM Monument Project Manager Martha Olson Jarocki, Chair of the ALB Monument Committee David Smith, Commander, Bay Area Post/Veterans & Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade

Green Roofs Workshop
Rooftops are often wasted space in our urban centers. They have been called "the last frontier!" Green-roof infrastructure is a proven technology in Europe where millions of square feet of rooftops are radically transforming the roofing industry. Green roofs can help exploit underutilized rooftops. Now all across North America more green roofs are being installed. Are you ready for the arrival of this fast growing industry? The Roof Consultants (RCI) Region 6 invites you to join them in San Francisco, California for their Summer Technical Program to be held on August 6, 2001 at the Ramada Inn San Francisco Airport North, located just north of the San Francisco Airport. This intensive one-day workshop on Green Roofs will introduce you to the green roof concept and the benefits of green roofs, and will include the following specific topics:
  • Green Roofs 101: An Introduction to Green Roof Technology
  • Setting the Standards: Incentives that Drive the Market
  • Waterproofing Material Selection, Design and Analysis
  • Defending a Green Roof: Detailing of the Roof System
  • Landscape Design: Soil and Plant Selection Plant Selection and Maintenance
  • Case Studies: Fluid-Applied Roof Systems
  • Case Studies: Thermoplastic Roof Systems

The speakers for this program, all experts in green roof issues, includes Steven Peck, Tom Liptan, Ken Kline, Gerson Burs, Theodore Osmundson, Charles Cronenweth and Peter D’Antonio.
For a detailed synopsis of this program and the speaker biographies please visit the program information page at the RCI Events Calendar at http://www.rci-online.org/. For additional information contact RCI @ 800-828-1902 or contact Region 6 Director John D. Shepherd @ jshepherd@rci-online.org.

Designing and Installing Code-Compliant Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
The California Energy Commission is sponsoring a series of workshops (June - August 2001) to promote the design and installation of hign quality cost effective PV systems. Hosted by local Joint Apprenticeship Training Centers (JATC) throughout California, this workshop provides an overview of small-scale solar electric generation, basic syatem design issues, and installation requirements to meet the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Day 1:
The first day focuses primarily on issues that impact the design of a PVsystem. The course begins with fundamentals of PV systems and solar energy. It then progresses to performance issues to identify wherelosses occur in a typical PV system. Siting concerns are discussed including how to take into account the effects of shading and orientation on system performance. Electrical and mechanical design issues are discussed to provide the participant with an overview of how to identify proper system design. The first day ends with an explanation of the important aspects of how the power conditioning equipment works and examples of current products.
Day 2:
The second day focuses primarily on issues encountered with installing code-compliant systems. Major installation processes are covered including the mounting and wiring of the PV array. Attention is given to each portion of the required hardware needed to install a safe and reliable PV power system. Issues discussed relate to both battery and non-battery-based systems. Issues specific to battery-based systems include battery types and wiring of critical load subpanels. Issues relevant to all PV systems include temperature-corrected wire ampacity, wire voltage drop, and grounding. The course concludes with system checkout procedures so the installer is confident that the system is installed properly and is operating as expected.
Prerequisites:
Attendees are expected to have a basic understanding of electrical systems. This workshop is designed to augment the understanding of standard wiring practices with those issues that are specific to PV installations.

Media Wedge Kit Training
Taught by Metaphor Project Founder Susan C. Strong, PhD, the goal of the new Media Wedge Kit Training is to help participants create and insert dynamic, witty, and irresistible new language like a wedge into the mainstream media wall. Metaphors like "frankenfood," "terminator seed," "smart growth," and "buffalo commons" open up a space in which questions get asked and longer, more in-depth stories follow. Without this wedge, such stories are much less likely to happen. The Media Wedge Kit Training makes the usually hit-or-miss process of coming up with new slogans, catch phrases, and metaphors very systematic and extremely effective. It brings to ordinary brainstorming a wealth of new tools, methods, and criteria and helps to channel as well as liberate participants' creativity. More creativity means more effectiveness. Metaphor Project founder Susan C. Strong has worked as a public educator, communication consultant, and writer for the last twenty years on issues of peace, environment, and sustainability. She is a cofounder of The "Who's Counting?" Project and a former Senior Research Associate at the Center for Economic Conversion, and taught literature and communication about contemporary issues for more than a decade at UC Berkeley's Rhetoric Department and also in the Communications Department of St. Mary's College. She is also a widely-published author and poet. Call (510) 548-2220 x 239 for more information.
