The Netherlands Call for Abstracts 6th international conference: Towards Sustainable Product Design will be held in October of 2001. Organised by: The Centre for Sustainable Design in association with Delft University of Technology, Design for Sustainability Programme Supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) To move towards sustainability will require new ideas and thinking. This will mean that companies need to go beyond eco-efficient products and processes towards 'triple bottom line' answers. Innovative solutions are required that significantly reduce energy and resource consumption. However, approaches to enable Sustainable Consumption will be a feature of more sustainable solutions. A key opportunity may come from the development of Sustainable Service Systems (3S) that focus on both function and system level innovations. TSPD #6 will highlight new research, methodologies and cases studies covering Sustainable Service Systems (3S). This will include papers on a range of themes including:
TSPD #6 invites papers from business, researchers and
academics. Abstracts (500 words) should be sent to CFSD by 31st January
2001. These will be reviewed by an International Advisory Board and
selected authors will be invited to submit full papers. |

12 - 1:15pm., (Lunch will be provided) Oakland City Hall in Hearing Room 3 The City of Oakland's Environmental Lunchtime Lecture Series Global Warming, Climate Change, and our Environmental Future Joseph Krupa, Engineer - Institutional Program manager and Team leader Department of Energy - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Have you ever wondered why we are constantly being reminded to reduce the wasteful use of energy in our homes and buildings (shut your computer off, turn-off unnecessary lights..etc)? Have you considered why we need to minimize the use of fossil-based energy by designing buildings that require minimal mechanical heating or cooling, keeping cooling loads down, maximizing the use of day light, or using clean energy such as green power? We take these actions to reduce the risk of global climate change that include extreme weather changes such as floods, hurricanes, drought etc... It is no secrete that through our activities we alter the composition of the global atmosphere and thus contribute to the earth's climate change. Please join us to have a better understanding of global climate change and what we can do to address the challenges of this change, the connection between the use of fossil-based energy and our environment, and the future of energy in the 21st Century. Earn AIA Professional Learning Credit Units if you are an AIA member. Please RSVP by noon Tuesday January 2, 2000 to Ferial Mosley at fmosley@oaklandnet.com or call 238-7433. |

9:30am-5:30pm, Donation: an amount you would feel truly happy contributing. Berkeley Buddhist Monastery One block West of Martin Luther King Way, Berkeley on the Southwest corner of Bancroft at McKinley (enter on McKinley) The First of a Pair of One-Day Workshops in Non-violent Communication (NVC) Fundamentals of Non-Violent Communication with Julie Greene A Self-Empathy Intensive: Using the NVC Model to Transform Judgements and Life-Alienating Thinking This workshop is for beginners and reviewers who wish to learn or gain fuller grounding in this approach to Compassionate Communication. We'll focus on the basics of the NVC model, including tools for: expressing oneself to others, empathizing with others, and empathizing with oneself. Simple conceptual distinctions underlie NVC's do-able step-by-step approach to: preventing and dealing with conflict, increasing the likelihood that everyone's needs can be met, and finding our way to simultaneously honest and kind relating -- especially at those times when we would find it most difficult to vulnerably say our deepest truth or when others are behaving in a way that makes it most difficult for us to respond from our tenderest and most caring heart. This workshop will give the fundamentals needed for practicing these tools in your life, and, for those who would like to practice with others, it fills the pre-requisite for participation in a Fluency Development Day Retreat (see February 18th below), or in ongoing practice groups held throughout the Bay Area (see website). Julie Greene, MA, is a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) and is the Bay Area Coordinator for CNVC. She teaches NVC workshops, retreats and ongoing groups throughout the Bay Area and in other parts of the country, and offers private sessions to individuals and couples. Recommended reading: Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion, by Marshall Rosenberg. Available at local bookstores, or make check for $22.67 payable to Julie Greene, and send it, with info on where and to whom to send the book, to the address below. Cost for the Workshops: If you are interested in attending, we'd like you to come regardless of your financial situation. In the tradition practiced at the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery there is no charge for either workshop. If you do have financial resources, and would like to make a donation, please be aware that Julie is self-supporting through her teaching and her needs include the basic life-expenses, nurturance and well-being which enable her to continue offering this work wherever folks are interested. Make checks payable to and mail to: Julie Greene, 510-655-1077, baynvc@azteca.net 151 Santa Rosa Ave. Oakland, CA 94610. 6:00 pm reception, 6:30 pm lecture, Donation $3 - $7 PG&E's Pacific Energy Center 851 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA ADPSR's Building Ecology Forum: Jim Morgan Architect as Activist : 25 Years Working for Peace with Justice co-sponsored by Pacific Energy Center, East Bay AIA COTE and the Ecological Design Institute Venerable founding member of both ADPSR and ARC PEACE (ADPSR's international sister organization), Jim Morgan has been engaged in peace, justice, and sustainability efforts since 1974. Jim's activism has ranged from opposing police brutality against squatters in his own neighborhood in Manhattan's Alphabet City to international housing issues for the United Nation's Earth Summits in Rio and Istanbul. You may have read Jim's story of Friends House in issue #1 of New Village, where he and the local Quaker community transformed a derelict apartment building in mid-Manhattan into a nurturing haven for homeless people with AIDS. He cares that others - to use his own words - "have the same rights, privileges, and opportunities that we, members of ADPSR, take for granted." Furthermore, he puts himself wholly behind his beliefs, whether that entails raising funds, teaching, writing, risking arrest, or volunteering his architectural services. Outspoken yet kind, accomplished yet humble, Jim Morgan shows us the path of a design professional courageously engaged in the issues of the day.
