Permaculture studies natural systems and works to integrate water, people, animals, land, plants, agriculture, technology, and community in order to create productive and beautiful environments. We will be using Bill Mollison's Permaculture Design Manual (available on the reference shelf at the Ecology Center or on loan from the library) and will be reading through the chapters, clarifying and discussing the principles, and hopefully coordinating work days where we can apply our designs. YEAH! All those who are interested are welcome. 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. The 10/19 and 11/13 meetings will have alternate locations.

Fall

A New College of California, Santa Rosa, CA

The EcoDwelling BA & MA Program
is now accepting students for a new Fall "cohort" in addition to that offered in Winter. The new cohort will start in September.
EcoDwelling: A holistic approach to radically affordable sustainable dwelling as a way and means of lifesupport, livelihood and community for personal and global liberation. A New College of California North Bay BA and MA Program Concentration EcoDwelling is a 3-semester Concentration offered through New College of California North Bay Campus's (Santa Rosa) Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community program. It offers accredited BA completion and MA degrees. The EcoDwelling Concentration is a holistic approach to dwelling in the broadest sense "encompassing the very nature of existence and being" and the entire process by which we inhabit our ecosystems and the planet. It is concerned with the causes of our current dwelling process failure, the principles of success, and the application of principles in the design of equitable, sustainable, universally affordable alternatives. The Concentration provides students with an opportunity to implement vision, theory and design as their own radically affordable, sustainable means of dwelling. And to then develop a project of their own choice that might help facilitate success for others as well. The EcoDwelling Concentration is intended for anyone with an interest in any aspect of the dwelling process and its relationship to the whole. It is intended for anyone interested in discovering how to make their own way and means of dwelling more affordable, sustainable and liberating – thereby being able to help others do the same. As awareness of our collective crisis increases, the need for those who can recognize, understand, and implement sustainable alternatives will be substantial.

Tuesday - Friday
11/12/2002 - 11/17/2002

Tuesday, One Day UDGBC Member Summit, Austin, Texas
Wednesday - Friday, Green Building Conference & Expo, Austin, Texas
Saturday - Sunday, Austin Green Building Tour, Austin, Texas

We are very pleased to announce that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) will launch its
First Annual International Green Building Conference and Exposition
USGBC has decided to forego having a separate Annual Member Summit next year in August and instead will supplement the Conference and Expo with a one-day Member Summit on November 12. Together with the Austin green building tour on November 16 & 17, and other groups wishing to co-locate their meetings and seminars, this week will present a cornucopia of offerings for the green building community.
Several leading organizations have joined us in presenting this first-of-its-kind event including the Construction Specifications Institute, AIA Committee on the Environment, Austin Energy Green Building Program, the Urban Land Institute, and the U.S. Department of Energy. The timing could not be better based on emerging market indicators. USGBC membership itself has jumped from 500 to more than 1,000 leading companies, organizations, colleges and governmental agencies in just the past 12 months alone. National, and even international, response to the Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating and certification system - LEED - has sparked keen interest in learning more about this new market trend. To that end, media coverage in mainstream and trade publications has expanded considerably over the past year. Our conference and exposition will provide a much needed annual "meeting place" for this rapidly expanding and dynamic green building industry. It will serve as the preeminent showcase for leading edge green technologies worldwide and will provide an outstanding educational program that highlights benchmarks of sustainability across a broad array of issues affecting site location and development, water use, energy, materials, indoor environmental quality, biophelia, health and productivity, financing and the many technologies and systems supporting such interests. Our goal is to be inclusive, showcasing not just what the Council and its members have to offer, but to feature the best green building contributions from supporting industries, organizations and the public at large.
Please contact us at expo@usgbc.org if you need further information. We look forward to seeing you in Austin!

Fundamentals of Skylighting in Non-Residential Buildings
Learn how daylighting with skylights can enliven building interiors, increase occupant productivity, and save energy in this introductory-level program by the Heschong-Mahone Group. In this introductory program the instructors will summarize research on the connection between daylight and productivity, provide an overview of skylighting design considerations, and direct participants to resources available to assist with skylighting design. The primary focus of the program will be skylighting in flat or very low-roof slope buildings. There is a tremendous amount of floor space directly under a roof in buildings of this type, including classrooms, gymnasiums, retail stores, offices, warehouses, industrial buildings, and many other facilities. Skylighting is a very effective way to bring daylight to the interiors of these buildings. This course is highly recommended for architects, lighting designers, electrical engineers, and interior architects involved in tenant improvements.
Space is still available in the upcoming Pacific Energy Center Programs described below. These programs are free, but pre-registration is required. Register by phone at 415-973-7268 or on the internet at http://www.pge.com/pec/classes.

Slide Show with Author Ianto Evans of the Cob Cottage Company
Ianto Evans of Cob Cottage Company is an applied ecologist, landscape architect and pioneer in earth structures (cob), with building experience on six continents. He will be visiting us on a book tour, along with an amazing slide show to celebrate the newly released book "The Hand -Sculpted House: a Practical and Philosophical Guide to Building a Cob Cottage." Cob is a traditional building technique using earth mixed with water, straw and often sand. Cob is easy to learn and inexpensive to build. It dries to a hardness similar to lean concrete and is used like adobe to create self-supporting, load-bearing walls. This ancient technology doesn't contribute to deforestation, pollution or mining, nor depend on manufactured materials or power tools. Cob is non-toxic and completely recyclable, which is important in this era of environmental degradation, dwindling natural resources and chemical contaminants. Since cob adds thermal mass, it is appropriate for use in passive-solar buildings.

Alternative Materials Class: Cob and Strawbale

Two natural building methods are currently undergoing renewed popularity. Cob is an ancient technique using a mixture of earth, sand and straw; it requires only simple handtools and can easily be shaped into imaginative structures. Strawbales are highly insulative and create an Old World character of thick walls and deepset windows. The methods are gaining building code approval in many communities. Info: 510/525-7610.

Biggest Energy Mistakes made in Residential Construction

A home's energy performance often looks good on paper, but does not always meet the customer's expectations with regard to comfort and energy costs. This presentation, developed from working with field problems, focuses on technologies and installation practices that provide the "biggest bang for the buck" when it comes to making homes more energy efficient. Instructor Steve Easley uses field slides to illustrate cost effective solutions to building energy efficient homes that are practical and long lasting.
