The program will be offered twice on this day: 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon or 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. PG&E's Energy Training Center - Stockton 1129 Enterprise Street, Stockton, CA "Turn Trash Into Cash" or Building De-Construction Jim Primdahl, De-Construction Program Manager. Institute of Local Self-Reliance, Washington, D.C. will explain why De-Construction is a cost effective way to remove residential and commercial structures to maximize material recovery. It merges two distinctly different industries: construction and recycling. De-Construction can be a profitable alternative to traditional demolition methods by: Reducing costs of removal and volume of waste compared to traditional methods of demolition, while providing a tax deduction, Recycling up to 85% of a building's materials for reuse, thus reducing tipping fees and environmental impact of construction practices, Reusing building materials by taking them out of the waste stream and creating job opportunities in a developing field. This educational program will cover the environmental benefits and tax advantages of deconstruction and will offer examples of successful deconstruction projects from around the country. This program is funded by California utility customers and administrated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. To register or for additional information contact: the Energy Training Center - Stockton at 1-800-244-9912 between 8 am and 5 pm. |

Northern California Solar Home Tours The Northern California Solar Energy Association (NCSEA) is the local chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) sponsor of the National Solar Buildings Tour held every year in October. Last year, during the National Tour of Solar Homes, more than 75,000 people visited over 600 solar homes in 43 states. Almost a thousand people visited over 20 homes throughout the bay area. These homes represented diverse designs and price ranges, showcasing a variety of building materials and techniques, and demonstrating how renewable energy technologies can be adapted to local climates and architectural styles.
We Need Volunteers! If you want to help with a tour, let us know. We need to start planning next year's tours: If you know a few willing solar homeowners, we'll help you organize a tour in your neighborhood. If your willing to organize a tour in your neighborhood, but don't know any solar homeowners, we'll try to find some for you. If you are a solar homeowner willing to participate in a tour, we'll try to find a volunteer tour organizer. 7:00pm, Free, Donations gladly accepted, First Congregational Church, 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley, CA Homes, Hope, A future. Come lend a hand. Jeff Halper and Salim Shawarameh talk about the Rebuilding Homes project. There is an alternative and its happening in construction zones. Israelis and Palestinians are joining efforts in rebuilding Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. These homes were destroyed during recent military invasions or as part of Jerusalem city policy to limit Palestinian housing. These families are now homeless and have lost their life savings. During rebuilding Israelis get a rare chance to meet Palestinian families and Palestinians get a chance to meet Israelis who are not soldiers or settlers. Everyone gets a chance apply their belief that another way is possible to a constructive cause . "The most important part of rebuilding for me was to have my children meet Israeli children. After the soldiers destroyed our house I was afraid my children would grow up hating all Israelis." Salim Shawarameh. Salim and Jeff will talk about the impact their work has had on their respective communities, and why working together to end the occupation is the only hope for both people. They will talk about their vision for a just and lasting peace, how this differs from Israeli and U.S. policies and will answer questions. Proffessor Jeff Halper is the Coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a Professor of Anthropology at Ben Gurion University. He has lived in Israel since 1973 and has been active in the Israeli peace movement for many years. Salim Shawamreh was born in the Old City of Jerusalem. He and his family became refugees following the 1967 War. In 1994 he built a home on his land in the village of Anaata in East Jerusalem. In July 1998 the Jerusalem municipality demolished the home. Soon after the family rebuilt it. On August 3, the home was destroyed again. With the help of ICAHD, Palestinian NGO's and friends the home was rebuilt again.
