Fall

A New College of California, Santa Rosa, CA

The EcoDwelling BA & MA Program
is now accepting students for a new Fall "cohort" in addition to that offered in Winter. The new cohort will start in September.
EcoDwelling: A holistic approach to radically affordable sustainable dwelling as a way and means of lifesupport, livelihood and community for personal and global liberation. A New College of California North Bay BA and MA Program Concentration EcoDwelling is a 3-semester Concentration offered through New College of California North Bay Campus's (Santa Rosa) Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community program. It offers accredited BA completion and MA degrees. The EcoDwelling Concentration is a holistic approach to dwelling in the broadest sense "encompassing the very nature of existence and being" and the entire process by which we inhabit our ecosystems and the planet. It is concerned with the causes of our current dwelling process failure, the principles of success, and the application of principles in the design of equitable, sustainable, universally affordable alternatives. The Concentration provides students with an opportunity to implement vision, theory and design as their own radically affordable, sustainable means of dwelling. And to then develop a project of their own choice that might help facilitate success for others as well. The EcoDwelling Concentration is intended for anyone with an interest in any aspect of the dwelling process and its relationship to the whole. It is intended for anyone interested in discovering how to make their own way and means of dwelling more affordable, sustainable and liberating – thereby being able to help others do the same. As awareness of our collective crisis increases, the need for those who can recognize, understand, and implement sustainable alternatives will be substantial.

Solar Electricity Seminar
Want to run your power meter backwards? Attend a one day seminar to learn how. Instructor Gary Gerber, P.E., President of Sun Light and Power, will illustrate how you can harness the sun's energy to produce electricity and "sell" the excess back to PG&E, creating an energy credit. Learn about the components of a typical system, the pros and cons of batteries storage, how to size a system (# of modules needed), typical systems costs, and more. This seminar includes a field trip* to a functioning system in Berkeley and comprehensive reading materials including application paperwork for the California Energy Commission's current rebate program. At the end of the day, a system will be designed for one of the class attendees, so bring your average monthly electricity usage (i.e. kWh usage on PG&E bills from the past 12 months), if possible, and a sketch of the property roof noting South.
Sun Light and Power Co. of Berkeley was established in 1976 and is one of Northern California's oldest and most experienced installers.

Dialogue on Innovation and Perseverance
You are invited to a special two-day gathering on the eve on September 11. Paolo Lugari, founder of Gaviotas, and Gunter Pauli, of the Zero Emissions Research Initiative, will lead a "Dialogue on Innovation and Perseverance" based on the story of Gaviotas, a remarkable village (population 200) in Colombia.
Gaviotas is an oasis of peace amidst the violence in Colombia. Engineers, artists, peasants and former street kids have come together in a barren savannah and accomplished the extraordinary. They have: - achieved energy self-sufficiency - established sustainable industries such as a zero emissions resin-making factory, - created a hospital and medicinal plant research center - reforested 36,000 acres and reintroduced biodiversity - governed themselves with remarkable equanimity. How did they defy the limits of the possible? How can we do the same? Come join us in exploring a path of hope.
For information on Gaviotas, visit: http://www.urbanecology.org/gaviotas/about.htm
About the workshop and how to register, visit: http://www.urbanecology.org/gaviotas/2002workshop.htm

7:00pm, Berkeley City Council Meeting in City Council Chambers, 2134 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Berkeley

Help the Ecology Center Lobby the City of Berkeley to go biodiesel!
Express your support for cleaner, healthier, renewable, oil-war-free fuel. The Ecology Center is working with City staff and various Citizen Commissions to build its case for making Berkeley the first municipality in the country to power all diesel engine vehicles operated by the City with 100% Biodiesel. The Ecology Center has fueled its 10 Curbside Trucks with Biodiesel for the past 18 months, and has been a pioneer in the use of biodiesel to quickly and effectively reduce harmful emissions from petroleum diesel engines. Please come to the City Council Meeting on September 10 and/or contact your Berkeley city councilperson and tell them that you support this easy and inexpensive transition to cleaner air. Another way to help is to sign the petition at the Ecology Center or at the Berkeley Farmer's Markets. The text of the proposed resolution is available with the petition.
To contact your councilperson, go to http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/email/email.html

Winter Permaculture Series: Introduction

One of the wonderful benefits of living in the Bay Area is our year round growing season. Learn how to best take advantage of it in our four-part Winter Permaculture Series. This first class will be an introduction to the fundamentals of permaculture, with a special emphasis on gardening in the Fall and Winter months. There will be an overview of what permaculture is, and we'll cover "zone planning," "relative location," and "sheet mulching" in detail. The class will combine teacher presentation and hands-on activity, and will take place in the teacher's extensive working garden. The series will be taught by Christopher Shein. Christopher runs Wildheart Gardens, an edible, native, medicinal and other useful plant permaculture nursery, design and landscaping business in Oakland. He teaches at Merritt College, and helps run the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library and SPACE, as well as other urban agriculture projects. Each class in the series may be taken individually.

Sustainable Business Alliance announces an evening reception and talk:
You Don't Have to Choose: How One Company Does Good While Doing Well.
Some businesses talk about Social Responsibility, while others live it out. Berkeley's Mal Warwick Associates exemplifies the latter. MWA was founded in 1979 to promote philanthropy nationwide by helping raise money from individuals for progressive political campaigns and nonprofit organizations committed to social change. Over the years the firm has raised an estimated $500 million to support hundreds of environmental, peace, anti-hunger, AIDS service, international development, and civil rights organizations and other good causes. From its inception, the company, which now employs almost 40 people, has committed itself to being a model for business ethics and socially-responsible business practices. Join us as CEO Mal Warwick discusses how the company's founding commitment to "make the world a better place" is reflected in its corporate governance, employment policies, corporate philanthropy, and business practices. Tools to Revitalize California Communities
The California Debt and Investment Advisory Commission (CDIAC), chaired by California State Treasurer Phil Angelides, offers a 'how-to' guide for accessing public and private economic development funds. It is the first daylong workshop sponsored by CDIAC on how to access private capital and state funding for economic development through a wide variety of financing mechanisms. The seminar will feature presentations on over 20 programs and techniques that promote redevelopment and economic growth in California communities. Roundtable and panel discussions will provide information on loans, grants, and other state debt programs available for purposes such as affordable housing, health facilities, pollution control, community planning, and small business development. Speakers will include over 50 representatives of state agencies, local governments, and private and non-profit investors, all of whom have extensive expertise in the field of community rebuilding and revitalization. Expected to attend the seminar - which is being held in conjunction with the International Economic Development Council Conference at the Oakland Marriott Convention Center - are federal, state and local government officials, economic development professionals, government finance professionals, planning staff and private investment professionals. "We encourage anyone interested in community revitalization to attend this seminar. It will provide valuable information on just what resources are available to help communities re-energize their local economies," said Lisa M. Harris, Executive Director of CDIAC. The "Tools for Revitalizing California Communities" seminar is part of the Treasurer's "Double Bottom Line" investment initiative, which focuses on achieving successful investment results while simultaneously broadening economic opportunity in California communities.
