SF Mime Troupe presents:
Veronique of the Mounties in “Operation Frozen Freedom”
After bringing “democracy” to Iraq, Syria, and France, the U.S. government, deep in its imperialistic quest to save the people of the world from themselves, turns its gaze to the terrorist threat on its northern border, Canada. Royal Mounted Policewoman Veronique Du Bois must journey deep into the heart of American darkness to recover the one object that may save her country. Why would America turn away from its own economic and social problems and attack the peace-lovers of the north? Who beneits from a constant war on terror? And what has Canada got that’s more valuable than oil?

Fall Semester

Santa Rosa, CA

EcoDwelling: A New College of California - North Bay BA and MA Program Concentration
EcoDwelling is a 3-semester Concentration offered through New College of California North Bay Campus' (Santa Rosa) Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community program. New College offers accredited BA completion and MA degrees, with additional concentrations in Ecological Agriculture, Painting in the Landscape, and Consciousness, Healing, and Ecology.
The EcoDwelling Concentration is a holistic approach to dwelling in the broadest sense "encompassing the very nature of existence and being" and the entire process by which we inhabit our ecosystems and the planet. It is concerned with the causes of our current dwelling process failure, the principles of success, and the application of principles in the design of equitable, sustainable, universally affordable alternatives. The Concentration provides students with an opportunity to implement vision, theory and design for radically affordable, sustainable means of dwelling, through lecture, discussion, design projects, and hands-on building with cob, strawbales, and other natural materials. The EcoDwelling Concentration is intended for anyone with an interest in any aspect of the dwelling process and its relationship to the whole. It is intended for anyone interested in discovering how to make their own way and means of dwelling more affordable, sustainable and liberating thereby being able to help others do the same. As awareness of our collective crisis increases, the need for those who can recognize, understand, and implement sustainable alternatives will be substantial. A wetlands contains runoff from the site, walnut woodlands, edible landscaping, and permaculture gardens linked to the aquaculture ponds. A straw bale greenhouse with photovoltaic shingles is used to raise tilapia fish and is linked to the organic gardens. The integrated waste management system emphasizes recycling and composting. Streamlining Solar Projects in San Francisco
A working group from SPUR , AIA SF, USGBC, and ADPSR members has been working with San Francisco government agencies to encourage "Greening" the building codes in San Francisco.
  • In our first meeting, one issue that emerged was streamlining the approval process for solar power projects in San Francisco. We heard from a lot of installers about how difficult and expensive the process is, especially when compared to other counties, and it seemed that there was a lot of interest in addressing the issue. SF Department of the Environment has been working on streamlining permits for solar installations and will give us an update on their progress at the meeting.
  • In addition, members of AIA have been reviewing the draft update of San Francisco's Residential Design Guidelines, which have implications for solar power systems as well. Although not binding codes, the RDG can either encourage or encumber the placement of solar systems on homes through recommending some styles of installation over others or controlling their visual impact. Additionally, there is some mention of solar power in SF's Planning Code as allowable intrusions into required side yards. This meeting will simultaneously be an opportunity to discuss these planning issues around solar power.
  • Lastly, SPUR Sustainable Development Committee member Paul Liotsakis has begun gathering information on economic development programs in SF and is interested in discussing the opportunities for directing this assistance towards renewable energy projects.

This meeting will address all of these issues. It is hosted by the SF Department of Building Inspection and is open to the public. I encourage those with an interest in the permitting procedure for solar installations to attend. City staff in attendance should include: SF Building Department, SF Planning Department, and SF Department of the Environment.

Bamboo Talk and Rare Plant Auction
Durnford Dart, who established his pioneering crop in 1989, is an acknowledged world expert on the marketing and cultivation of bamboo, he is one of the very few independent, non-funded growers to establish a bamboo farm outside Asia. The plant auction is to help raise funds to cover Durn's travel expenses. His book, The Bamboo Handbook, was published in 1999 and is an informative and fascinating introduction to the world's largest grass. Of the 1,500 bamboo species worldwide, Durnford's Belli Bamboo Parkland boasts a plantation of over 65 acres containing 250 individual running and clumping species. "Bamboo species are found from the snowline to the equator and its uses are only limited by one's imagination," he says. "Bamboo is ideal for landscaping, it provides nutritious food, building materials, scaffolding, stage sets, household and garden utensils …" Durnford's main market crop is edible bamboo shoots and poles where he has generated a rapidly growing market. In addition, he imports and distributes many styles of bamboo flooring, a durable, eco- friendly alternative to wood. "Chop a tree down and you have to wait 20 - 40 years for another one to grow", he points out. "Bamboo can be harvested annually, will keep regenerating for hundreds of years and over fifteen years will yield five times the amount of timber that you'd get from Pine. The flooring is durable, attractive and it's an environmental godsend. " Hosted by the Northern California Bamboo Society, the SF Zoo Horticulture Department and the SF Zoo Membership Department
