The Ecocity Sessions A six-week course in ecocity thinking, theory, design and mapping

Taught by Richard Register, President, Ecocity Builders
Basic ecocity theory will be presented, as well as an overview of the city in evolution, the city in nature, the city in history and the city today. We will focus on an ecocity toolbox of reshaping methods and strategy guidelines for activism. Come prepared to listen, think, ask questions and get to work drawing, mapping and testing out your new ideas!

  • Week One: Evolution, biological analogy and whole systems vision for the built habitat.
  • Week Two: Parameters of the disaster‹effects of the anti-ecological city on localities and the whole world, nature of the car/sprawl/highway/oil infrastructure contrasted with the pedestrian city.
  • Week Three: Great examples from around the world.
  • Week Four: More great examples, emphasis shifting to the local.
  • Week Five: Tools to fit the task, including mapping workshops, TDRs, car-free housing.
  • Week Six: Where do we go from here? Using the tools, changing ourselves and the world we live in.

Richard Register Richard Register has over thirty years experience in ecological city theory and design. In fact, it was Register who invented the term "ecocity" in 1978. His Ecocity Berkeley, Building Cities for a Healthy Future, has been a classic in eco-urban circles since it was first published in 1987. He is also the author of three other books, including Village Wisdom, Future Cities and Ecocities, Building Cities in Balance with Nature. Register founded the International Ecocity Conference Series in Berkeley in 1990, and has since co-organized four more: Adelaide, Australia in 1992; Yoff, Senegal in 1996; Curitiba, Brazil in 2000; and Shenzhen, China, in 2002. This international series brings together the best innovators, educators, administrators and activists in the field.
Ecocity Builders is currently completing projects for Mills College in Oakland and for the CA State Coastal Conservancy. They are also consulting with ecocity developers in China, and are getting ready to launch the Sixth International Ecocity Conference: Cities and Global Warming, for 2005, likely somewhere in view of the melting Alps in Europe. Visit their website, www.ecocitybuilders.org for more information. (Website update will be complete by November 20).
Prerequisites: You need to read Ecocities, Richard's 2002 book, and be finished by at least the 3rd week of class. Check for $150 made out and sent to Ecocity Builders, 1678 Shattuck Ave., #66, Berkeley, CA 94709. Class size limit: 30 people.
For more information, call 510-419-0850 or email kirstin@ecocitybuilders.org.

The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) presents:
A Professional Design Training on High Performance Schools
A diverse panel of experts will discuss daylighting design and student productivity, high performance electric lighting, optimized HVAC systems, sustainable site planning and materials, and available tools for districts and their design teams. Case study projects will also be presented. Architects can receive 6 hours of Continuing Education AIA Credit hours.
The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS, often referred to as "chips") aims to increase the energy efficiency of schools by providing information, services, and incentive programs directly to school districts and designers. The Collaborative's goal is to facilitate the design of high performance schools: environments that are not only energy efficient, but also healthy, comfortable, well lit and contain the amenities needed for a quality education. We have created a set of design guidelines to build environmentally sustainable schools. High Performance Schools are cost effective in the short-term as well as the long-term. Some of the Benefits of High Performance Schools include: Improved Student and Teacher Health, Heightened Student Performance, Decreased Operating Costs, Lower Absenteeism, Enhanced Indoor and Outdoor Environment. Not to mention financial incentive programs. CHPS design guidelines are currently a mandatory design standard for all future school's in San Francisco, San Marcos, Santa Ana, Vacaville, Dry Creek Joint Elementary, Los Angeles and San Rafael City Unified School Districts and Coast Community College. We are a free informational resource made up of all of the major state agencies in California who are involved with building Public Schools.

Learn how to size, specify and design your own solar photovoltaic (PV) system
The CEC's $3.80 /watt rebate ends December 31st!!! (After that, it'll be $3.60.)
Attend a one day seminar and learn how to submit an application for the full $3.80 per/watt while funds last. Instructor Gary Gerber, P.E., President of Sun Light and Power, will explain how you can produce your own electricity and "sell" the excess back to PG&E, running your meter backwards! You will learn about all of the components of a typical system, how to decide whether you want batteries, how large your system should be, how much it should cost, and more. This seminar includes a field trip to a functioning system in Berkeley and comprehensive reading materials. At the end of the day we will design a system for one of the class attendees, so bring your average monthly electricity usage (i.e. kWh usage on PG&E bills from the past 12 months), if possible, and a sketch of the property roof, noting south. Sun Light and Power Co. of Berkeley, CA was established in 1976, and is Northern California's oldest and most experienced installer. (License #326203) Attendees who live within 20 miles of Berkeley will receive a free residential site inspection by an SL&P professional. The value of this inspection is $150.00.

Regenerative Design: Toward the Re-Integration of Human Systems with Nature
Mr. Reed is one of the country's foremost experts in green building and community planning issues. His firm, Natural Logic, Inc. focuses on the subject of whole system, or integrated, design that emphasizes building evolutionary capability within the design, construction and management of our environment. Serving as a consultant to the U.S. Green Building Council in the development of the LEED rating system and as a member of the national LEED Steering Committee, he provides valuable perspective on the next new horizons.

"Natural Systems have almost 4 billion years of experience in the development of efficient, adaptive, resilient, and sustainable systems." (Gil Friend, 1991)

What understanding do we need to move our society through the phases of developing a sustainable society? - the first phase - seeking to make our systems more efficient; - the second phase - using nature as a model; the subtle, yet significant, - the third phase - participating with nature on its own terms. , Mass Transportation/Parking Muni buses #15 and #22 take to you 18th and 3rd streets Shuttle from Market Street available on request Pay parking is available adjacent to the lecture hall
Please RSVP to Kriss Kokoefer at kkokoefer@tekus.com by Tuesday, December 9th as seating is limited. http://www.tekus.com http://www.natlogic.com
