A Lot in Common
A 76-minute documentary by Emmy-award-winning producer Rick Bacigalupi Meet the neighbors: Grandpa Roosevelt and his grandson, Joan the single mom, Ruth the psychic, and Amy the metal sculptor. They all have "A Lot in Common" when together they turn a vacant lot in Berkeley, CA into a blooming community garden full of lush native California vegetation, eco-friendly technology demonstrations, and outdoor artwork by local artists. They clash over political ideals, runaway pets and public art, yet in the end, they grow a community of neighbors. Interviews with urban planning visionary Jane Jacobs, PBS reporter/author Ray Suarez, environmentalist Paul Hawken, Urban Habitat co-founder Carl Anthony, lend context and background to the discussion of the Commons. Landscape architect/psychologist Karl Linn who envisioned and orchestrated the creation of the gardens, provides on-going commentary. Post-screening discussion with Rick Bacigalupi and Karl Linn, creator of Peralta and Northside Community Art Garden Commons

Redefining Progress and the San Francisco Foundation Present:
Sustainability Roundtable Session 3: S P R A W L and Sustainability: Land Use and the New Budget Realities
Sprawl is a major challenge to planning and sustainability efforts in metropolitan areas throughout the US, and particularly in California. Current land use and tax policies in tandem with the tight economy will increase municipalities’ dependence on land use for revenue. As planners, residents, and workers address historical inequities, new budget realities are likely to exacerbate the historical inequities that have so shaped our cities. Our Roundtable will provide a forum for professionals to tease out the core tensions surrounding urban sprawl in the context of creating a more sustainable and equitable infrastructure. Invited presenters Include:
Carl Anthony, Ford Foundation
Tom Jones, California Futures Network
Sunne McPeak, Bay Area Council
Antonio Diaz, PODER
Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, Working Partnerships
Moderator: Michel Gelobter,
Please RSVP to: Ani Gupta (510) 444-3041 x310, or to roundtable@rprogress.org. You are welcome to RSVP the day of the event by calling (510) 282-1309. There will also be an RP representative greeting people at the door. Join us afterwards for a brown bag lunch in the Embarcadero Center/ Justin Hermann Plaza.

The Sustainable Business Alliance presents:
Business Technology for the 21st Century: How Chaos, Complexity & Adaptive Science Can Transform Your Organization
Just as the industrial economy was created by the discoveries of physics and chemistry, so the "molecular" economy is being birthed by the technologies emerging from complexity, chaos, biology, and genetics - the so-called adaptive sciences. Workshop facilitator Terry O'Keefe will explore:
  1. The key concepts of adaptive science
  2. Why they have the power to transform your business
  3. How the new business technology is being put to work

Here's some of what you will learn:

  • Why control and planning are out and adaptation and emergence are in.
  • Using chaos theory to find your company's "sweet spot" of creativity.
  • Why 21st century managers will manage "rules" and not employees.
  • How the marriage of genetics and software yields a potent new problem-solving tool.
  • Six principles on the path to an adaptive enterprise.
  • Lots of real-world examples of adaptive technology.

Artisan Builders presents
Eco-Building Symposium & Celebration
A community gathering for envisioning, sharing, and educating on Ecological Design and the Building Arts. Saturday, May 10, 2003 Topics to include: Affordable Sustainable Building, Mainstreaming Green, Alternative Building Systems, Elemental Building, & Conservation Hydrology: Rehydrative Eco-Building. Featuring: Joe Kennedy, Carol Venolia, Brock Dolman, Darrel DeBoer, Bruce Hammond, and Chuck Johnson. Opportunities for spontaneous discussion topics may exist.
The idea for this symposium was spawned by my evolving interest in a philosophical approach called Elemental Building. I am using this background format of the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water, as a basis for the design-build process. Marianne Balfe and I are working on a video project and a collection of writings to document these ideas in philosophy and practice. Our intent at this symposium is to make audio-visual recordings of you, the participants, during the Elemental Building portion of the event, for possible future use in an artistic video documentary on elemental building. To that end, I ask that you think about your work and other projects in these terms, and be prepared to speak about your ideas around this topic area. If you have any writings that would be appropriate for the compilation, please approach me about this. We will be circulating video release forms at the symposium that expresses whether you are willing to be recorded. If you have any comments, questions, or objections, please contact us. The archival footage of the event will be accessible for other participants to use. Best regards,
Make checks out to Artisan Builders, and mail to: 291 Hutchins Ave; Sebastopol, CA 95472 Work trade and scholarships are availableónobody turned away for lack of funds.

Blue Vinyl: The Entertaining Documentary

San Francisco's Environment Department and the Film Commission invite you to attend a special screening of the film of Blue Vinyl, an important and engaging documentary about the dangers of PVC plastic. Blue Vinyl won the award for documentary excellence in cinematography at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. After the screening, director Judith Helfand will be available for questions. Special guests Monique Harden and Edgar Mouton, Jr. will discuss the devastating effects of vinyl manufacturing facilities on the African American community of Mossville in Louisiana. With humor, chutzpah, and a piece of vinyl siding firmly in hand, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand and co-director and award winning-cinematographer Daniel B. Gold travel to America's vinyl manufacturing capital in Louisiana and beyond in search of the truth about vinyl, the most popular and second fastest selling plastic in America. Helfand's parents' decision to "re-side" their house with this seemingly benign cure-all for many suburban homes turns into a toxic odyssey with twists and turns that most ordinary homeowners would never dare to take. Along the way, learn how much our reliance on vinyl (a.k.a. PVC plastic) could be costing communities, workers, children, our health and the environment. The result is a humorous but sobering and uniquely personal exploration of the relationship between consumers and industry. Many City departments deal with the effects of about polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Approximately 75% of all PVC manufactured is used in construction materials. PVC is the worst plastic from an environmental health perspective, posing great environmental and health hazards in its manufacture, product life and disposal. PVC poses a great risk in waste incineration and building fires, as it releases deadly gases such as hydrogen chloride long before it ignites. Some departments may be interested in learning more about the toxic dioxin waste that causes health problems such as cancer, endometriosis, neurological damage, liver and kidney failure, birth defects, immune system damage, and respiratory problems.

The Collaborative for High Performance Schools Design Training
Sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric Company. A diverse panel of experts will discuss daylighting design and student productivity, high performance electric lighting, optimized HVAC systems, sustainable site planning and materials, and available tools for districts and their design teams. Case study projects will also be presented. The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS, often referred to as "chips") aims to increase the energy efficiency of schools by providing information, services, and incentive programs directly to school districts and designers. The Collaborative's goal is to facilitate the design of high performance schools: environments that are not only energy efficient, but also healthy, comfortable, well lit and contain the amenities needed for a quality education. We have created a set of design guidelines to build environmentally sustainable schools. High Performance Schools are cost effective in the short-term as well as the long-term. CHPS is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Some of the Benefits of High Performance Schools include: Improved Student and Teacher Health, Heightened Student Performance, Decreased Operating Costs, Enhanced Indoor and Outdoor Environment. CHPS design guidelines are currently a mandatory design standard for all future schools in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Vacaville Unified School Districts. Notes: 6 hours of AIA Continuing Education
To register please visit our Events page at: www.chps.net or call CHPS: 877-642-CHPS
