Phitsanulok, Central Thailand Six Week Permaculture Principles Course & Natural Building Training: Design and build a sustainable center for orphaned children in Northern Thailand. Co-sponsors/Facilitators: Rosemary Morrow (Australia), Jon Jandai (Thailand), Jim Connor & Nao Sangkara (Whispering Seed-Thailand), Em Ponna (Cambodia), Kleiwerks (USA) Join leading permaculture teachers from 3 countries and 30 dedicated activists from Southeast Asia and around the world. We will create a special place, which will model sustainable living through permaculture, natural building, organic farming, and holistic education. The Whispering Seed is a village-based community learning center and home for orphaned and abused children. They focus on finding the joy in serving others through cross-cultural exchanges, sustainable living practices, and natural childrearing. They are active in the international alternative education movement, including organizing and hosting international conferences and youth travel programs. They have recently acquired beautiful land which will be their permanent home... In this hands-on intensive training course we will come up with an overall design, develop the land, and build the first earthen dwellings at the new home of The Whispering Seed. The training includes the full 72-hour Permaculture Design and Practicum Certification requirements, along with in-depth hands-on application of your newly learned skills. Also, Thailand's foremost earthen builders will be leading the group in the construction of an adobe and wattle and daub main house and other dwellings. We will create organic gardens, orchards, and composting toilets; build bamboo and mud houses; and learn how and where to plant and place things so that functions and energy from each element serves multiple purposes with the intention of creating a self-reliant system. Time permitting, we will also work with rice paddy and cotton fields and do restorative planting on nearby land that was recently cut and burned. For more information visit www.kleiwerks.com |

7:00 - 9:00pm, Free, Ecology Center Bookstore, 2530 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley CA Run Your Car on Vegetable Oil: BIODIESEL- A home-grown alternative fuel Join us at the Ecology Center Bookstore for a slide show and discussion about one of the most exciting alternative fuels today, biodiesel- a clean-burning diesel alternative made from vegetable oil. Like other plant-based fuels, biodiesel burns clean, is grown in the US- reducing our reliance on foreign oil- and is renewable. Best of all, biodiesel is available NOW, can be used in any existing diesel engine with no modifications, blends with petroleum diesel if needed, and performs almost identically to petroleum diesel. It can be purchased commercially in the Bay Area or can be cheaply ‘homebrewed’ using waste restaurant fryer oil. City of Berkeley runs a truck fleet on 100% recycled biodiesel, and a growing number of drivers use it in diesel cars. There will be a slideshow and a presentation by users, homebrewers, and distributors, followed by a discussion with you, the audience. We’ll have literature to take home, and a display of equipment. Bring your questions! Topics covered:
This event is a
project of the East Bay Biodiesel Internship, a homebrewer co-op. The
Interns recently completed a three-month course in biodiesel production.
The slideshow and presentations are a 'final project for this class. |

David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA U.S. Green Building Council’s Greenbuild Conference and Expo The David L. Over 560 abstracts have been submitted to the USGBC for inclusion in Greenbuild’s educational sessions. The finalists will be selected and notified of their acceptance on June 2, 2003. Partner Announcement The USGBC is pleased to announce the top-tier partners on-board for Greenbuild: American Institute of Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, the Department of Energy, Green Building Alliance and the Urban Land Institute. Our sector partners as of March 31 include: the American Society for Interior Designers, the American Society for Landscape Architects and the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council. Speaker Highlight Dr. Ken Yeang has built an international reputation from his home base in Kuala Lumpur. He works in Europe, the United Kingdom and throughout Asia and has won major prizes for architecture such as the Aga Khan award and the Auguste Perret Prize. His hallmark is Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD) and he leads the world in his search for low energy, quality architectural solutions to high-rise buildings. The high-rise tower has evolved over the last century to be the most energy consuming building type ever invented. It is an ongoing element in the cities of the world and the most needy and difficult building type for ecological reform. Yeang won against five international architectural megastars because his design displayed depth of social understanding, real energy saving characteristics and architectural distinction. Yeang was also recently awarded joint first prize for the international town planning competition for the Huanan New City master plan (498 acres) in Guangzhou Province, China. He is currently involved in a large commercial project in Stuttgart, Germany and is collaborating with Foster Associates (UK) on the Elephant and Castle project in London. He has lectured on the topic of ecological design theory and practice to audiences in over 30 countries in the world. He also authored Reinventing the Skyscraper: A Vertical Theory of Urban Design.
