SF Mime Troupe presents:
Veronique of the Mounties in “Operation Frozen Freedom”
After bringing “democracy” to Iraq, Syria, and France, the U.S. government, deep in its imperialistic quest to save the people of the world from themselves, turns its gaze to the terrorist threat on its northern border, Canada. Royal Mounted Policewoman Veronique Du Bois must journey deep into the heart of American darkness to recover the one object that may save her country. Why would America turn away from its own economic and social problems and attack the peace-lovers of the north? Who beneits from a constant war on terror? And what has Canada got that’s more valuable than oil?

EcoDwelling: A New College of California - North Bay BA and MA Program Concentration
EcoDwelling is a 3-semester Concentration offered through New College of California North Bay Campus' (Santa Rosa) Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community program. New College offers accredited BA completion and MA degrees, with additional concentrations in Ecological Agriculture, Painting in the Landscape, and Consciousness, Healing, and Ecology.
The EcoDwelling Concentration is a holistic approach to dwelling in the broadest sense "encompassing the very nature of existence and being" and the entire process by which we inhabit our ecosystems and the planet. It is concerned with the causes of our current dwelling process failure, the principles of success, and the application of principles in the design of equitable, sustainable, universally affordable alternatives. The Concentration provides students with an opportunity to implement vision, theory and design for radically affordable, sustainable means of dwelling, through lecture, discussion, design projects, and hands-on building with cob, strawbales, and other natural materials. The EcoDwelling Concentration is intended for anyone with an interest in any aspect of the dwelling process and its relationship to the whole. It is intended for anyone interested in discovering how to make their own way and means of dwelling more affordable, sustainable and liberating thereby being able to help others do the same. As awareness of our collective crisis increases, the need for those who can recognize, understand, and implement sustainable alternatives will be substantial. Singular or Annual Events

Thursday - Thursday
September 4th - 11th

$850 (airfare, not included), and includes meals, lodging, workshops, and transportation. Private rooms are available for an additional $200. Cancun, Mexico

World Trade Organization (WTO) Protests
Join an OCA Delegation to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Protests in Cancun, Mexico In 1999, the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) helped organize protests and teach-ins against the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle. The "Battle of Seattle", as it came to be known, was the coming of age of the global grassroots in its attempt to stop the headlong rush of corporate globalization. Now you have the opportunity to join OCA director Ronnie Cummins and other OCA staff on an escorted delegation to the historic teach-ins and protests against the WTO in Cancun, Mexico. Thousands of concerned citizens from North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia are expected to converge on Cancun, including leading farm, food, Fair Trade, and anti-GE activists. They'll attend a wide range of workshops, forums, and cultural events. Following up on the theme of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, "Another World is Possible," the emphasis in Cancun will be on presenting alternatives to corporate globalization. Organizers emphasize that public events will be strictly non-violent, and that any civil disobedience protests will be organized separately from the teach-ins and educational workshops. Trade analysts predict that the outcome of the WTO Ministerial in Cancun will largely determine whether such corporate globalization schemes as genetic engineering, water privatization, investment and social services privatization, and patenting of drugs and life forms will go forward. In the wake of the unpopular war in Iraq, the Bush administration will likely find itself increasingly isolated. The OCA delegation, limited to 100 people, will include experts on genetic engineering and organic agriculture such as Ronnie Cummins, OCA National Director; Dr. Michael Hansen, from the Consumers Union; Laura Miller and John Stauber, publishers of PR Watch, a leading source of information on corporate power and propaganda; and Ryan Zinn, OCA's biodiversity specialist.
These leaders, and others, including Mexican activists, will provide in-depth presentations and workshops for delegation participants. Delegates will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide array of activities, including the International Forum on Globalization's "Teach-In on the WTO" and the International Fair Trade Expo and Symposium, as well as local Mayan archeological sites, like Tulum. Costs for the September 4-11 OCA Delegation to Cancun will be $850 (airfare, not included), and includes meals, lodging, workshops, and transportation. Private rooms are available for an additional $200.
To reserve your space on the WTO delegation, send a $400 deposit to:

Turnings Great and Small: Where the Global and the Local Meet
A talk by noted teacher and author Joanna Macy to benefit Berkeley EcoHouse. Supported by KPFA. Sunday September 21 Musical improvisation by Nicole Milner, piano, and Gael Alcock, cello, will precede Joanna's talk. "Future generations will look back at the epochal transition we are making from an industrial growth society to a life-sustaining society, and may well call this the time of the Great Turning. A revolution is gaining momentum through the actions of countless individuals and groups around the world because people are realizing that our needs can be met without destroying our world. We have the technical knowledge, the communication tools, and material resources to grow enough food, ensure clean air and water, and meet rational energy needs.
To see this as the larger context of our lives clears our vision and summons our courage." --Joanna Macy Joanna Macy joins insights from Buddhism, systems theory, and deep ecology with a passion for social change, making her a leading voice in movements for peace, justice, and a safe environment. She brings a new way of seeing the world, as our larger living body, transforming despair and apathy into constructive, collaborative action in this critical time for our civilization. Berkeley EcoHouse embodies Joanna's vision. It is a grassroots expression of the Great Turning--a living laboratory of ideas, practices, and technologies dedicated to promoting ecologically healthy living. Located in the heart of a diverse and thriving neighborhood, rich with history and activism, the environmental demonstration house, its gardens and renewable energy education programs in the local schools are well under way, doing their part for a healthful future.

Energy Primer for People Living around the Sun:
Renewable Energy Alternatives for the Home
Edward Nold, owner of Green Home Design in Oakland will discuss the use of solar energy for space heating, water heating and generating electricity in the San Francisco bay area. He will explain the basic principles of energy utilization, heat transfer, sun paths and the reasons for the seasons. There will be practical hands-on demonstrations and discussions. This is an introductory course no knowledge or experience is necessary to come away with a good understanding of how solar works.
  • Hour 1 - Understanding Energy, where it comes from, and how it gets around.
  • Hour 2 - Solar Buildings (Passive Solar)
  • Hour 3 - Solar Thermal (Active & Passive Solar)
  • Hour 4 - Solar Electricity (Photovoltaics)

Each attendee will receive a copy of NCSEA's Solar Energy Resource Guide, a copy of Solar Today magazine, a Tax Credit Guide and a outline of the course. Ed has a BA in architecture from UC Berkeley, a general contractors license, and decades of experience in both the renewable energy industry and the residential construction industry. Until earlier this year he was on the board of the Northern California Solar Energy Association (NorCalSolar) and he remains on the board of Architects / Designers / Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR) and maintains this website.
