A searchable database on sustainable designing and building, with a very comprehensive list of websites. Also, a directory of building professionals in Northern or Southern California regions for $10.

Green Building Professionals Directory. Sustainable Sources, 108 Royal Way, Suite 1004, Austin, TX 78737, 512-288-5223. Searchable online database of green building professionals. Listings are on a "shareware" basis.

The Harris Directory. B.J. Harris, 1583 Pacheco St., No. 125, Santa Fe, NM 87505, http://www.harrisdirectory.com. Most comprehensive on recycled content with more than 1000 listings.

Environmental Building News. RR1, Box 161, Brattleboro, VT 05301, 802-257-7300, fax 802-257-7304, http://www.ebuild.com/. The most direct and relevant monthly newsletter for builders and architects. The content is clear and objective. Subscription-funded instead of manufacturer-funded, ensuring an unbiased position. Their first five years of articles are available on CD-ROM for $165. EBN in conjunction with What's Working has also produced a very useful binder of manufacturers' literature, along with their analysis, available for $98.

Guide to Resource Efficient Building Elements, 5th ed. Center for Resourceful Building Technology, PO Box 100, Missoula, MT 59806, 406-549-7678, fax 406-549-4100. Contains contact and product information for resource efficient and recycled material manufacturers producing everything from foundations to roofing. The best for resource analysis.

REDI Guide (Resources for Environmental Design Index). Iris Communications, PO Box 5920, Eugene, OR 97405-0911, 541-484-9353, fax 541-484-1645. Can be searched slowly for free (http://www.oikos.com/redi/) or can be purchased in print for $25.

Eco Living Sourcebook. 110 Linden St., Oakland, CA 94607, 510-452-0500. This database contains listings for more than 500 recycled-content building and construction products from 80 U.S. companies. Includes, content percentages, standards, test results, specifications, distributors, and especially useful pictures.

National Park Service Sustainable Design and Construction Database. Assembled by Sally Small, PO Box 25287, Denver, CO. 80225, 303-969-2466, http://www.nps.gov/dsc/dsgncnstr/. Contains information about an estimated 1300 product listings from over 550 manufacturers, all rated in 14 environmental factors. There are also listings of over 7000 recyclers of construction debris nationwide and information on construction site recycling. Products can be searched by manufacturing plant location, CSI division, or product type.

This is a notebook-style publication with symbols representing various criteria including: recycled content; renewable resource; in-plant energy efficiency; low emissions in plant; minimum packaging; minimum transportation; minimum installation hazards; low toxic emissions; durability; simple non toxic maintenance; reusable; recyclable; fair business practices; research and education programs.

City of Austin's Sustainable Building Sourcebook Green Builder Program. PO Box 1088, Austin, TX 78767. A technical and logistical guide covering practical issues associated with various green building choices. $25.

AIA Environmental Resource Guide. AIA Order Dept., PO Box 753, Waldorf, MD 20604, 800-365-ARCH, fax 800-678-7102. This comprehensive guide is continually updated but really only useful for the researcher as it demonstrates just how "gray" all these decisions are. There are no clear winners, only the guilt that you may have forgotten one of the infinite factors. No brand names are listed.

McRecycle USA Registry Service. McDonald's Corporation Environmental Affairs, Kroc Drive, Oak Brook, IL. 800-220-3809. Contains listings for more than 900 products made by 500 manufacturers, sorted by CSI divisions. Free; updated continuously.

The Green Pages: The Contract Interior Designers' Guide to Environmentally Responsible Products and Materials. Andrew Fuston, 45 East 25th Street 20th Floor, New York, NY 10010, 212-779-3365. Contains product listings from 536 manufacturers of environmentally responsible building materials, including recycled products.

The Resource Guide to Sustainable Landscapes and Gardens. Environmental Resources, Inc., 2041 East Hollywood Ave., Salt Lake City, UT 84108-3148, 801-485-0280.This 368-page paperback book lists more than 1,100 environmentally responsible landscaping materials, products, and information sources. Sorted by CSI number.

Sustainable Design Resource Guide, Third Edition (January 1997). Joint AIA / ADPSR project. Building Materials for the Environmentally Hypersensitive. CMHC Publications, PO Box 3077, Markham, ON, Canada L3R 6G4, 800-668-CMHC. 238-page assessment of materials suitable for occupants with chemical sensitivities.

Environmental Choice M Program Certified Products and Services. Lynne Patenaude, TerraChoice Environmental Services, 613-952-0264. Lists manufacturers and products complying with Environment Canada's EcologoTM requirements.


DESIGN & SPECIFICATION TOOLS

Prepared with assistance from the Alameda County Recycling Board, currently the most comprehensive spec available. Probably the most useful tool that procurement agencies can provide their design professionals. $35.

 

GreenSpec. Kalin Associates, 154 Wells Ave, Newton Centre, MA 02159, 617-964-5477. Database of green products and practices expressed in technical language so that they can be included in architectural specifications. Comprehensive in addressing waste avoidance. Approximately $135.

Waste Spec. Triangle J Council of Governments, PO Box 12276, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, 919-549-0551. Model language to insert into specifications to address waste reduction techniques, salvage, reuse of materials, and recycling of construction waste. Free.

 

Environmental Knowledge Base (EnvKB). Funded by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Laboratories and the U.S. EPA. Available from Design Harmony, 16N Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603, 919-755-0300. This ambitious and very extensive database/design tool offers environmental considerations at every phase of design, gives material suggestions, and offers case studies. The program interfaces with MCASES cost estimating spreadsheets, DOE 2.1, EXPOSURE, and includes the CERL Design Process Map and an alternative materials database.

IAQ Product Service Guide. This comprehensive directory includes a section on "Interior Construction Products," plus air filters, cleaners, detection equipment, mitigation products and consultants. Cutter Information Corp. 800-888-8939. $75.

Healthier Indoor Environments: Canadian Sources of Residential Products and Services. This directory includes a section on "Low Polluting Building Products, Materials, and Technologies," also lists consultants who provide screening evaluations of materials and cleaning and maintenance products. R-2000 Procurement List. This list assists builders in selecting products that will meet R-2000 IAQ requirements.
