Hemp Update 4/99
States are looking at hemp with interest for
its agricultural potential. Among the developments: Virginia
and Montana have formally called for an end to the federal
ban on industrial hemp. The Minnesota Senate passed a bill
in March to allow experimental hemp production. Also in
March, the Hawaii House of Representatives voted to allow a
10-acre test crop to be grown for the state. New Hampshire,
North Dakota, and Tennessee are considering pro-hemp
legislation. New Mexico recently funded hemp research. A
university of Kentucky study in 1998 estiminated that hemp
could yeild farmers $220 to $600 per acre (depending on
whether it was grown for fiber or seed). Researchers at
North Dakota State University suggest that hemp could be
useful as a rotational crop for wheat and patoto
farmers.
