Green building materials and methods have some environmental or health benefit. Their production and use mean less energy consumption, less natural resource depletion, and less mining and processing with their associated pollution problems. They contain fewer toxic components which will effect the health of the producers, builders and occupants.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the use of green building materials and methods requires us to consider the impacts our "civilization" has on the local and global environment. We begin to appreciate those cultures currently or recently dependent upon less industrial building materials and methods. We have much to teach each other.

Straw-Bale
"Straw bale construction has gained a tremendous popularity because it touches a sustainability nerve in the general society. The specifics for this situation are very compelling when one realizes straw bale construction does the following:

  • Uses a waste product. Spent rice straw is presently burned producing prodigious air pollution and greenhouse gasses.
  • Produces buildings of superior insulation - regardless of the current debates regarding specific R-values.
  • Integrates thermal mass into the building via its interior skin allowing easily achieved passive solar performance.
  • Can best be built in workshopd involving neighbors, friends, and others in a community effort.
  • Is flexible and adaptable, allowing a greater variety of architectural form.
  • Saves on the use of wood that at present is largely not harvested in a sustainable manner."
