Sustainable Forestry

"Home to more than half the world's terrestrial species, forests are the great storehouses of natural life. But the over-exploitation of forests - for timber, fuel, agricultural land, and other basic needs - has wiped out more than half of the world's original forest cover. Effectively addressing the threats to forests will require a combination of
1) significant increases in protected areas, where logging and other major resource extraction is strictly off limits, and
2) a fundamental shift in how timber markets operate."
World Wildlife Fund

" This past November the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) dismissed a formal Sierra Club appeal of the certification claiming it had missed a deadline for filing documents. The Sierra Club believes a recent FSC investigation of J. D. Irving's use of pesticides raises serious questions about the certification process."
Sierra Club of Canada

"It has been estimated that over 200 million people world-wide live in or depend on Ancient Forests for their livelihood. Many of these people belong to indigenous societies who have lived sustainably in the forests for millennia, relying on hunting, gathering and subsistence farming. And increasingly, indigenous leaders are on the front lines in the struggle to protect the forest from industrial logging and other destructive practices. Greenpeace has forged important alliance with First Nations indigenous groups in Canada, and with tribes such as the Deni in the Amazon and many others to join them in their struggle for land tenure and an end to destructive logging on their customary lands."
Greenpeace

"Reducing wood waste can save builders hundreds of dollars. Approximately one-sixth of the wood delivered to a construction site ends up in the landfill. Builders who have adopted construction site waste reduction programs have saved $300 to $800 on a single job."
Efficient Wood Use in Residential Construction
Natural Resources Defense Council

"In the US, state forests in Pennsylvania and Minnesota represent a large proportion of FSC-certified areas. Regarding US federal forests, there is currently a voluntary moratorium on their certification by FSC-US because of strong reservations by the US Forest Service and some environmental groups. On the retail side, it is important to note the recent membership of Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement chain, in the North American buyers group Certified Forest Products Council. By joining CFPC, Home Depot pledged to secure an increasing amount of certified forest products.

In total, 16 million hectares, or just 0.5 percent of the world's forests, have been certified under FSC, and 75 percent of that is located in three countries: Sweden, Poland and the United States."

Engineered Wood Journal

"The fat-cat non-profits already in bed with Big Money, like the NRDC and WWF, are notorious for environmental compromises (NAFTA, Big Oil in Equador, nuclear bail out/energy deregulation, acceptable kill levels for dolphins and other species, etc.). They helped create the FSC's timber-friendly "green label" and are naturally going to support it."
