Green building materials and methods have some environmental or health
benefit. Their production and use mean less energy consumption, less natural
resource depletion, and less mining and processing with their associated
pollution problems. They contain fewer toxic components which will effect
the health of the producers, builders and occupants.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the use of green building materials
and methods requires us to consider the impacts our "civilization"
has on the local and global environment. We begin to appreciate those
cultures currently or recently dependent upon less industrial building
materials and methods. We have much to teach each other. |

Bamboo
"Bamboo is just grass, but it varies in
height from dwarf, one foot (30 cm) plants to giant timber bamboos that
can grow to over 100 feet (40 m). It grows in a lot of different climates,
from jungles to high on mountainsides. Bamboos are further classified
by the types of roots they have. Some, called runners, spread exuberantly,
and others are classified as clumpers, which slowly expands from the original
planting. There are also varieties of root systems that are a mixture
of these types. Generally, the tropical bamboos tend to be clumpers and
the temperate bamboos tend to be runners."

Cob
"The word cob comes from an old English root meaning
a lump or rounded mass. Cob building uses hands and feet to form lumps
of earth mixed with sand and straw, a sensory and aesthetic experience
similar to sculpting with clay. Cob is easy to learn and inexpensive to
build. Because there are no forms, ramming, cement or rectilinear bricks,
cob lends itself to organic shapes: curved walls, arches and niches."

Construction Waste
"In cities around the country,
construction and demolition (C&D) debris--the waste produced in the course
of constructing, renovating, and demolishing buildings--accounts for 10
percent to as much as 30 percent of the total municipal waste stream."

Waste Water Treatment
"Living Machines® accelerate nature's own water
purification process. Unlike chemically based systems, Living Machines®
incorporate helpful bacteria, plants, snails and fish that thrive by breaking
down and digesting organic pollutants. Wastewater treatment takes place
through a series of differently managed environments, a diversity of organisms
that eat the waste in the water." |
